Unfortunately body weight not only affects our looks and self esteem but also our health. It is well known that severe fluctuations of the body weight affect ovarian function, menstruation, fertility, general health and can have lethal consequences.
Consider the following lessons on life:
Lesson one
As human beings, we lack certain knowledge.
You need to know your body mass index (BMI) – healthy range of BMI is between 19 and 25. Do you know yours? Go to www.healthyfood.co.nz, look under Tools.
Lesson two
Within a context of uncertainty, we must still believe and act.
BMI less than 19 or more than 25 – see your GP, organise a lifestyle review. Nothing changes unless you decide to take charge and make serious commitments.
Lesson three
Sometimes to get what you want, you have to risk all you’ve got.
For the overweight: wardrobe, couch, cravings, TV.
For the underweight: wardrobe, excessive exercises, peer pressure.
Lesson four
Success depends on mastery of both appearance and reality.
Life is surface, and the art of life involves skating on it well. But, of course, if reality is awful, then appearance will get you only so far. Knowing which context calls for superficiality and which context calls for reality is essential for success in life.
